Link building is basically the process of acquiring incoming links to a website for the sake of traffic and search engine rankings.

In a perfect world, your website with awesome content will naturally have other websites linking to it because it is so great and everyone loves it. This large number of incoming links will be deemed respectable in the eyes of search engines (especially Google), and this will allow your website to rank high for the keywords related to the topic of your site.

In the real world, if your website gets no traffic and low searchability in the beginning, it will NOT have many other sites linking to it even if it has really good content, because no one will know about it! It’s the chicken or the egg thing. So basically for new sites trying to get more and more readership, you must ACTIVELY request for links rather than passively wait for them to come in. This active process is called link building.

Another crucial thing to understand about link building is that when a link coming into your particular site contains the link text or anchor text which matches what your site/page is about, it will help you to rank high for that keyword. While all incoming links will count for something and contribute to your site’s total “link juice”, the ones that have desirable anchor text and also from related authority sites on that topic will matter the most.

That is link building in a nutshell. It is a basic task you as must understand and do on a regular, ongoing basis if you want your site to get ranked well in search engines. Now, how you go about actually starting a workable link building campaign is another subject we will cover in the next article, so stay tuned!
